Why Expansion Joint Waterproofing Is Needed

Expansion joints protect a building from stresses caused by soil and building settlement, as well as temperature fluctuations.

A joint is essentially a hollow gap. Water can easily penetrate through it into the walls and foundation, leading to negative consequences.

Capillary moisture from the soil can easily soak up to a meter into both concrete and brick. It washes lime out of the concrete and cement joints of the masonry. This reduces strength, causes efflorescence to appear on the brickwork, and, during frost, causes the concrete and cement to crack as they absorb moisture.

Pressurized and non-pressurized water — soil and atmospheric moisture — act in a similar way, but more aggressively due to their different chemical composition. They penetrate unprotected joints, flood basements, promote mold growth, and cause streaking and condensation on walls. Humidity inside the building increases, and the interior finish deteriorates.

Waterproofing expansion joints in both underground and above-ground structures protects a building from the harmful effects of moisture. It's best to carry out this work as soon as possible and to a high standard — otherwise, you'll need to spend money on repairs to the premises on a regular basis.

How to Waterproof Joints

Waterproofing of a wall expansion joint begins with removing the filler, plaster, and paint. The contact surface is then coated with a penetrating compound.

Waterproofing of Foundation Expansion Joints

This is done using pouched grouting — injecting free-flowing polyurethane or epoxy resins under pressure. Different types of polyurethane resin can either harden or expand in volume upon contact with water. Polyurethane seals moving joints tightly, as it is flexible, returns to its original shape after deformation, and adheres well to any material.

These are protected with reinforced membrane waterproofing. This means that, over the filler and resins, the joint is covered with fiberglass mesh or metal mesh in two layers. Several layers of waterproofing combined with metal strip reinforcement help seal joints up to 5 mm wide against pressurized water. Joints up to 15 mm wide are fitted with metal or rubber compensator profiles.

The cavity is filled with:

acrylic or bentonite-based cord
rubber compensator profile
cord made of foamed polyethylene or polyurethane

Important to Remember

Joint waterproofing will only be effective if protection methods and materials are combined appropriately. Only an experienced engineer can determine whether joint reinforcement is needed, which mastics and fillers to use, and where you can save money without compromising quality.

How Much Expansion Joint Waterproofing Costs

The cost can only be determined after an inspection and calculations. The final amount depends on many factors:

mobility, width, and location of the joint
presence and intensity of water pressure
area to be treated
chosen waterproofing scheme
aggressiveness of the water
cost of materials
installation temperature conditions

An engineer will visit the site and carry out a free inspection. They will explain in detail what needs to be done, which materials are best suited, and roughly how long the work will take. If you're satisfied with the estimated timeline and prices, our managers will prepare a precise technical and commercial proposal and contract. Once the documents are signed and payment is made, our specialists will begin work and complete it strictly on schedule.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty do you provide for completed works?

The warranty for any type of waterproofing is 2 years. For injection waterproofing and foundation reinforcement, the warranty is up to 5 years.

    Why is injection waterproofing needed?

Injection waterproofing helps to interrupt capillary flow and reduce the permeability of foundations, walls, and floor slabs. Injections of polyurethane gel (works on concrete), polyurethane resin (works on concrete and precast structures), and silicon-siloxane compounds (work on brickwork and precast structures) prevent moisture from being absorbed into the structural materials and improve the waterproofing properties of buildings.
