Why Pond and Reservoir Waterproofing Is Needed

Unlike a lake, a pond is an artificial body of water with no natural inflow or outflow. It cannot renew itself, so over time it accumulates harmful impurities and minerals seeping in from the soil. As a result, decorative and agricultural reservoirs without waterproofing quickly stagnate and turn into swamps. Such a pond can no longer be used for swimming, breeding valuable fish species, or drawing water for irrigation.

Pond waterproofing is needed if:

the soil contains a lot of sand (highly permeable)
groundwater lies close to the surface
water drains away quickly and has to be constantly refilled
the pond's color has changed and it has lost its clarity
an unpleasant odor has appeared
the bottom has become covered in silt, and the banks are overgrown with grass
swarms of mosquitoes and midges have appeared over the water
the pond is difficult to maintain and requires frequent cleaning

If pond waterproofing isn't done at the construction stage, the reservoir will soon need to be drained and cleaned. On top of that, any surviving flora and fauna will need to be relocated elsewhere, after which the waterproofing can be installed, the pond refilled, and the desired plants and fish reintroduced.

It's simpler and cheaper to take preventive measures than to "treat" a pond that has shallowed and become swampy.

How Waterproofing Work Is Carried Out

The choice of material for pond waterproofing depends on the type of pit. Different work schemes are used
for concrete versus compacted soil.

Earthen Pit

If the pit's bottom is earthen, it can be covered with concrete or with a durable base of geotextile fabric before the waterproofing is installed. The fabric is secured with staples, then covered with a special film, or the pond is waterproofed with liquid rubber. Both materials easily adapt their shape and, unlike concrete, are not affected by soil shifting and are safe for living organisms.

Liquid rubber is ideal because it can coat even complex, irregularly shaped cavities. It can create any shoreline shape and dries within 2–3 days.

Concrete Pit

When waterproofing a previously used concrete pond, it's necessary to first assess the extent of damage to the load-bearing structure. Due to groundwater movement, the soil can heave, causing microcracks to form in the concrete base. Moisture from both the soil and the pond itself enters these cracks, causing the structure to crumble even faster.

To prevent the rigid structure from further deterioration, film-based or liquid waterproofing is applied. Since geotextile fabric doesn't need to be laid over the finished concrete structure, this significantly reduces costs.

Will your savings be enough to complete the project, or will you need to take out a loan? To accurately assess your resources and avoid falling into debt or a prolonged construction process, it's important to determine the exact cost in advance.

How Much Pond and Reservoir Waterproofing Costs

The project cost will depend on what preparatory work is needed, and which material and how much of it will be required for the pond waterproofing. Only a specialist can provide an accurate assessment and correctly calculate the scope of work after an on-site inspection.

We offer every client three options for the technical and commercial proposal (KP) — economy, mid-range, and premium. You decide how much to invest in the waterproofing.
This is transparent pricing with no upselling of unnecessary services. Our engineer will visit, assess the area and complexity of the project, outline a plan, and calculate the cost. You'll choose the option that works best for you, and we'll start preparing the documents so we can begin work as soon as possible.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty do you provide for completed works?

The warranty for any type of waterproofing is 2 years. For injection waterproofing and foundation reinforcement, the warranty is up to 5 years.

    Why is injection waterproofing needed?

Injection waterproofing helps to interrupt capillary flow and reduce the permeability of foundations, walls, and floor slabs. Injections of polyurethane gel (works on concrete), polyurethane resin (works on concrete and precast structures), and silicon-siloxane compounds (work on brickwork and precast structures) prevent moisture from being absorbed into the structural materials and improve the waterproofing properties of buildings.
