When Floor Waterproofing Against Groundwater Is Needed

Puddles on the floor and mold on the walls are most commonly seen in:

basements and semi-basements
ground floors of buildings, especially when the foundation sits low
bathhouses and saunas
bathrooms and shower rooms
kitchens

If the waterproofing is worn out or poorly installed, moisture from the ground will seep into the space. Water can travel through microcracks like capillaries and rise up to ground level. This causes the floors around the entire perimeter to become cold and damp. This problem can be avoided by carrying out floor waterproofing in a timely manner.

Basements need waterproofing the most, since they are closest to groundwater. If flooding occurs after prolonged rain, property will need to be rescued urgently — calling in a crew, pumping out water, drying out the space, and carrying out repairs. An unprepared homeowner will pay in both time and money for nature's whims and the lack of waterproofing.

How the Work Is Carried Out:

In Apartments, Country Houses, and Public Buildings

The standard sequence of steps is as follows:

an engineer visits the site to inspect it, assess its current condition, and identify weak points
based on the assessment, the most effective waterproofing method is selected
agrees on the technical and commercial proposal and timeline, and includes them in the contract
the engineer and construction team visit the site to carry out the work

The method proposed by the specialist will depend not only on the condition but also on the type of premises.


Apartment Buildings

In apartments, floor waterproofing is needed in high-humidity areas — bathrooms and toilets. Even if you spill a basin of water or forget to put the drain plug in, a moisture-retaining waterproofing layer will protect the apartment below from flooding, so you won't have to pay for your neighbor's repairs.

Floor waterproofing in an apartment is applied before installing a cement screed or a self-leveling floor. It's needed to prevent moisture from the mixture penetrating into the load-bearing structures. Waterproofing under underfloor heating is necessary so that, in the event of an incident — a burst pipe or a leak from neighbors — moisture doesn't seep under the tiles and damage the heating elements.


Public Buildings

The condition of the floors in medical, retail, administrative, and other public buildings affects the comfort and health of many people. Waterproofing prevents the spread of mold and bacteria, helps keep the space warm and dry, and keeps the air clean.

How the Cost of Floor Waterproofing Is Determined

The price of floor waterproofing work is made up of:

type of waterproofing material
technical characteristics of the site — year of construction, material of the interfloor slabs, condition of the floor at the time of measurement, and distance to groundwater
scope of work — removal of the old flooring, opening the pores of the concrete, installation of waterproofing, and finishing work

Only an engineer can calculate the materials needed and the final price per m² of floor waterproofing during an on-site inspection. They will offer several options of quality materials — budget, mid-range, and premium. Gidropas takes clients' budgets into account.

    Engineer Site Visit

    After a preliminary cost estimate, if the price range works for you, our engineer visits the site and prepares a technical and commercial proposal

    Calculation of Works + Materials

    We will provide recommendations on material selection and reinforcement/waterproofing technology, and calculate the exact price for your project

    Signing of the Contract

    After the technical and commercial proposal (KP) is agreed upon, we sign the contract. We start work upon receipt of an advance payment. We accept both cash and non-cash payments, with or without VAT

    Execution of Works

    We mobilize equipment, materials, and manpower, and begin waterproofing or reinforcement works

    Acceptance and Payment

    You inspect the quality of the completed work and, after signing the acceptance certificate, pay the remaining balance under the contract

    What warranty do you provide for completed works?

    The warranty for any type of waterproofing is 2 years. For injection waterproofing and foundation reinforcement, the warranty is up to 5 years.

    Why is injection waterproofing needed?

    Injection waterproofing helps to interrupt capillary flow and reduce the permeability of foundations, walls, and floor slabs. Injections of polyurethane gel (works on concrete), polyurethane resin (works on concrete and precast structures), and silicon-siloxane compounds (work on brickwork and precast structures) prevent moisture from being absorbed into the structural materials and improve the waterproofing properties of buildings.
