Why Bridge Waterproofing Is Needed

Bridge waterproofing is an essential step in the construction and repair of bridges. Improper installation or a complete absence of waterproofing leads to the gradual deterioration of the bridge, deformation of the road surface, and the formation of cracks and breaks.

A waterproofing barrier is necessary for:

Metal Structures

Rust tends to spread and "eat away" at metal. It's caused not only by moisture but also by the salt that road services use to combat ice on bridges. Each year, a bridge loses at least 4% of its metal structures to corrosion.

Wooden Bridges

Water causes wooden spans to swell and deform, and washes away fire-retardant and biological protection treatments. The structure changes color, begins to rot, becomes brittle, and loses its load-bearing capacity. A wooden bridge without waterproofing is destined for rapid deterioration.

Reinforced Concrete Bridges

Rain washes calcium compounds out of concrete, altering the material's structure — it becomes porous and loses strength. In winter, moisture inside the slab freezes, expands, and damages the concrete. In spring, meltwater travels through microcracks like capillaries, reaching the reinforcement, which causes the metal base to rust and deteriorate.

Waterproofing ensures safety for everyone who walks or drives across the bridge, as well as for those who service its utilities. A properly installed waterproofing barrier reduces the risk of accidents and slows down the bridge's "aging" process.

It's easier and more cost-effective to reinforce a structure's weak points in advance than to later spend money replacing parts or carrying out expensive repairs.

How the Work Is Carried Out

First, our engineer visits the construction site to assess the scope of work and agree with you on the technical and commercial proposal and timeline. Once the contract is drafted and signed, you make the payment, and the Gidropas team begins work.

Bridge waterproofing begins with cleaning the concrete surfaces and removing rust from the reinforcement. The slabs are then covered with a leveling layer of reinforced concrete, weak spots are reinforced with mesh, primer is applied, and the waterproofing barrier is installed using mastic, liquid rubber, or Technonicol waterproofing membranes for bridges. After this, the overpass can be filled with concrete and paved with asphalt.

Типы материалов

Bitumen-based waterproofing. Suitable for all regions. Four layers of hot mastic are applied to the prepared surface, with each layer covered in fiberglass mesh after it has fully cooled.

Roll-and-mastic materials. Ideal for regions with a moderate climate. These consist of a base-free roll bonded to a mastic layer with a reinforcing interlayer.

Roll-based waterproofing. The most popular type is Technoelast Most B waterproofing. It suits any climate zone and stands out for its exceptional strength and ability to withstand sharp temperature fluctuations.

Hot and cold mastic. For northern regions, mastic-based waterproofing made from thiokol paste is recommended. Just two layers are enough to create a strong, monolithic coating.

How Much Bridge Waterproofing Costs

The final cost of bridge waterproofing depends on:

scope of work
type of structure
degree of deterioration of the spans, supports, and beams
quantity of materials
type of protection
additional services

Our engineer prepares several project options, differing in scope of services and cost. He will show you how the price changes depending on the chosen technology and type of material.

You get full control over the project and only the services you actually need.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty do you provide for completed works?

The warranty for any type of waterproofing is 2 years. For injection waterproofing and foundation reinforcement, the warranty is up to 5 years.

    Why is injection waterproofing needed?

Injection waterproofing helps to interrupt capillary flow and reduce the permeability of foundations, walls, and floor slabs. Injections of polyurethane gel (works on concrete), polyurethane resin (works on concrete and precast structures), and silicon-siloxane compounds (work on brickwork and precast structures) prevent moisture from being absorbed into the structural materials and improve the waterproofing properties of buildings.
