Why/When Polyurethane Waterproofing Is Needed

Various materials are used for polyurethane waterproofing, but only mastic can compete with bitumen. It is used to protect bridges, supporting structures, and road infrastructure. However, thanks to its high reliability, it is also suitable for pools, garages, foundations, and roofs, as well as for screeds and under-tile applications. Overall, polyurethane is suitable for both exterior and interior work, including floor protection.

Roof waterproofing is a special case, since unlike other types of mastic, polyurethane is more wear-resistant and therefore won't develop microcracks under environmental exposure. This is due to its resistance to temperature fluctuations — it withstands both freezing and thawing cycles typical of the local climate without issue.

Advantages of Polyurethane:

resistant to abrasion
withstands temperature fluctuations
highly resistant to pressure
less susceptible to chemicals than other materials
average service life — 15 years

How Polyurethane Waterproofing Work Is Carried Out

The main requirement for polyurethane waterproofing
is the condition of the surface:

Surface Preparation

The surface must be dry, level, and clean. Before application, dust, rust, and oily substances must be removed. Rinsing the surface with pressurized water and allowing it to dry is a good approach.

Defect Repair

Before starting work, all defects must be repaired. For example, cracks should be filled with an appropriate repair material.

Please Note

When working with this type of waterproofing, keep in mind that aggressive chemical cleaning methods are not recommended. The surface must also be treated with a primer before application: polyurethane is typically applied 3–4 hours after the primer has dried.

Otherwise, the application process for polyurethane is quite similar to that of bitumen. Sealants and mastics for polyurethane waterproofing can be applied using almost any convenient method — brush, roller, etc. Reinforcing elements such as mesh tape or fiberglass cloth can be used to reinforce joints: the technician first installs the fiberglass mesh, then applies the reinforcing layer, and finally covers everything with two layers of waterproofing.

Also, take into account the time needed to prepare the material itself: for example, polyurethane mastic should sit in a warm room for about 24 hours so that its viscosity reaches optimal levels (this approach is relevant for work carried out at temperatures below 15°C). The mastic can also be thinned with xylene to speed up the process.

It's best to consult a specialist about which type of waterproofing to choose. Based on the project's requirements, it will become clear whether single-component polyurethane waterproofing is suitable for you, or whether another option should be considered.

Important to Remember

Polyurethane can and should be applied in multiple layers, but each layer must dry for about 4 hours before the next is applied. To enhance the technical properties of the polyurethane, the final layer can be sprinkled with dry graded quartz sand and coated with a finishing varnish.

How Much Polyurethane Waterproofing Costs

Despite its excellent technical properties, which place polyurethane waterproofing among the market leaders, the price of the required materials is higher than that of other types of waterproofing.

The decision on which option to use depends on the project's requirements: the type of structure, its function, and, of course, the objectives outlined by the client at the outset.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty do you provide for completed works?

The warranty for any type of waterproofing is 2 years. For injection waterproofing and foundation reinforcement, the warranty is up to 5 years.

    Why is injection waterproofing needed?

Injection waterproofing helps to interrupt capillary flow and reduce the permeability of foundations, walls, and floor slabs. Injections of polyurethane gel (works on concrete), polyurethane resin (works on concrete and precast structures), and silicon-siloxane compounds (work on brickwork and precast structures) prevent moisture from being absorbed into the structural materials and improve the waterproofing properties of buildings.
