Applications of Topping Floor Coating

A topping floor is a concrete floor with a reinforcing surface coating. The topping itself is a construction mixture that fills in irregularities in the concrete, making it more resistant to wear and abrasion, while also improving its appearance.

A distinctive feature of concrete floors is that they harden gradually, meaning their strength characteristics only fully develop over time. During this period, mechanical loads can cause irreversible damage to freshly poured concrete. To prevent this, the floor can be reinforced with additional compounds.

Topping coating is most often chosen for parking garages, workshops, warehouses, and other industrial or manufacturing facilities. This is because such floors typically experience high operational loads and require added protection. That said, thanks to its properties, this reinforcing coating can also make residential floors virtually permanent. It's a great solution for spaces with heavy foot traffic.

Types of Reinforced Flooring

By Type

Quartz-Based
Corundum-Based
Metallized

The most durable floors are metallized ones: they withstand intense mechanical loads, though they are vulnerable to moisture. A good alternative is corundum-reinforced flooring — the inclusion of this material also protects the floor from mechanical damage, but without the risk of moisture damage. Quartz flooring offers less reinforcement but is more affordable and well-suited for spaces with moderate foot traffic.

Topping Floor Installation Technology

Installing a topping floor means applying the compound to a freshly poured surface. Because of this, the work begins during the screed stage, and the entire process takes just a single work cycle — making it quick and efficient.

Application Sequence:

Preparing the floor base (leveling and compaction)
Installing a waterproofing layer to prevent moisture from penetrating under the concrete coating. The concrete may also be additionally reinforced using fiber, rebar, or mesh.
Placing, compacting, and leveling the concrete mixture.
Troweling the concrete after a technical pause (3–6 hours at +20°C), during which the concrete gains minimal strength.
Application of the dry topping mixture. This is done in 2–3 stages: using power trowel machines, a hardening protective layer is worked into the surface.
Smoothing the surface and final troweling.
Application of a waterproof curing film. This prevents moisture evaporation, thereby improving the screed's strength properties and reducing the risk of cracking.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What warranty do you provide for completed works?

The warranty for any type of waterproofing is 2 years. For injection waterproofing and foundation reinforcement, the warranty is up to 5 years.

    Why is injection waterproofing needed?

Injection waterproofing helps to interrupt capillary flow and reduce the permeability of foundations, walls, and floor slabs. Injections of polyurethane gel (works on concrete), polyurethane resin (works on concrete and precast structures), and silicon-siloxane compounds (work on brickwork and precast structures) prevent moisture from being absorbed into the structural materials and improve the waterproofing properties of buildings.
